Rethink, Reengage, Revolutionize: Disrupting the Old School of Civic Empowerment

I recently gave a talk to high school students on the power of self-awareness in guiding our life’s decisions (link below). This got me thinking about the role of self-awareness in civic engagement among young people. Growing up undocumented in the US has instilled in me a profound respect for the privilege of calling myself a U.S. citizen. I want the younger generation to be actively engaged in discussions that will shape the world they live in.

In a world where traditional civic education often remains confined within the pages of textbooks and the walls of classrooms, a paradigm shift is in the making. We are at a juncture where the need for innovative thinking in youth civic engagement is imperative. This article proposes a disruptive approach, intertwining the principles of self-awareness and introspection with civic participation, to foster a generation of engaged, empathetic, and empowered citizens.

The Foundation of Self-Awareness

Our journey begins with self-awareness, an often-overlooked cornerstone in civic education. Traditional models emphasize the structure of government and political processes, but they frequently miss an essential ingredient: the individual’s understanding of themselves. Self-awareness is the compass that guides young individuals in navigating the complex landscape of society and politics. It allows them to align their values and beliefs with their civic actions, leading to more meaningful and impactful contributions.

From Passive to Active Engagement

The shift from passive to active civic learning is crucial. Instead of just learning about government functions, young people need to be actively involved in community projects and policy-making processes. This hands-on approach is crucial – it ignites a deeper understanding and connection to their roles as citizens. By understanding how various professions contribute to societal well-being, young people can make more informed career choices that align with their values and their desire to contribute positively to society.

Redefining Success Metrics

It’s time to challenge conventional success metrics for young people. The things that we teach the next generation should keep up with the pace of a changing society and world. Civic engagement and community service should stand alongside academic achievements as markers of success. These experiences are instrumental in developing critical life skills such as empathy, leadership, and problem-solving – competencies that are invaluable for holistic development.

Leveraging Technology for Civic Engagement

In the digital age, leveraging technology is non-negotiable. Digital platforms offer unique opportunities for youth to engage in civic activities. These platforms can provide accessible, inclusive, and engaging avenues for participation, reaching a demographic that might be disengaged from traditional methods of civic involvement. For example, websites like Change.org enable young people to initiate and sign petitions on issues they care about. This can be a straightforward and impactful way for them to engage in advocacy and learn about the power of collective action. Platforms like Coursera or Khan Academy offer courses on political science, public policy, and social justice issues. These resources can help young people gain deeper insights into civic matters.

The Culture of Continuous Self-Reflection

A culture of continuous self-reflection among young people is essential. This ongoing process of introspection ensures that their engagement in civic duties is sustained and meaningful. As they grow and their understanding of the world evolves, so too should their involvement in community and political activities.

The Power of Collective Action

Finally, the focus shifts from individual achievements in civic engagement to the power of collective action. Encouraging collaboration among young people from diverse backgrounds can lead to more innovative solutions to community issues. It’s in this synergy of different ideas and perspectives where the magic of real change happens.

About the Doc

Dr. Batliwala was raised in the piney woods of Tyler, Texas, where he attended the University of Texas at Tyler and graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. During undergrad, he launched a tech company focused on repair and maintenance of smart devices, which today operates retail stores in East Texas under the brand of SmartPhone ER. He then attended the University of North Texas Health Science Center for medical school, where he was elected into the Sigma Sigma Phi Honor Society. During medical school, he was able to marry his childhood fascination with outer space and interest in ophthalmology by earning an internship at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, researching visual impairment experienced by astronauts in zero gravity.

Dr. Batliwala completed his ophthalmology residency at Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City. He then obtained further sub-speciality training in LASIK and presbyopia correcting intraocular lens implants at ClearSight Vision Correction Center in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Batliwala thoroughly enjoys traveling. In his free time, he enjoys listening to engaging podcasts and audiobooks on business, leadership, and all things outer space. He fortunately had the opportunity to merge his passion of business and space by completing a Masters of Global Management with an emphasis in space business, leadership, and policy (MGM) through the Arizona State University. He was part of the inaugural cohort of this one-of-a-kind program.
